All Lupin III References.

Documenting all Lupin III references in p5 would be a really huge and interesting undertaking. If I remember right, a character straight up says that she used to watch a show featuring a femme fatale thief when she was a kid.
Oh it's my time to shine, as a huge Persona 5 fan :D Though a lot of references were already mentioned!

Persona 5 is a Lupin III reference. The protagonist's persona is straight up Arsené Lupin, someone else's persona is Goemon (the original Goemon), the Lupin run shows up, etc.
About the protagonist's persona - the main one is Arsène indeed, but he also has another form (in the DLC, it's called Raoul) that looks lowkey like mush up of Lupin and Jigen! Those are both of them:

And the screenshot of the iconic run scene parody!:

  • Protag's guardian Sojiro's design is a direct reference to Jigen's design (he also wears the opposite colors of white/pink where Jigen wears black/blue)
  • Sojiro ALSO owns a small yellow car
I found him in his car, I think it's never shown fully? But it's probably not Fiat (sadly)...

And few little things that weren't mentioned yet:
On The Last Job Lupin special there was that girl of the week, Asuka, who looked like that:

I think she could have inspired the design of one of the main characters of Persona 5, Makoto:

Also one of the protagonists' best friends, Ryuji, is constantly compared to the monkey (which he doesn't like). Isn't it familiar? :D He's got similar weakness for pretty girls as Lupin too.

Speaking of characters having similarities to the lupgang - the girl mentioned earlier by @cotton, Ann, who wishes to be like "famous femme fatale thief" from the anime she saw, is the "sexy" one in the group and wears red catsuit, very in Fujiko's style.

And there's Yusuke, also mentioned earlier, whose Persona is (the first) Goemon. Yusuke fights with katana, speaks with very poetic language, strives to be the best in what he does (he's an artist) and if he fails, he acts very dramatic. He's also [here's a little spoiler, if you want to play the game!!!] raised by the old master who is jealous of his skills, so he lies and uses him. So yeah, very inspired by Goe, I would say :) Yusuke's my fav, as you can guess, since I love Goemon so much ;)

I think that's all I can think of... Well, there's a reason why Persona 5 was the direct reason I started to watch Lupin ;)

Do you remember the iconic scene in Episode 0: First contact, where Zenigata struggles asking for a 'hambargyar" in a fast food restaurant?

I always have thought it was a tribute to Inspector Closeau's hamburger scene in the Pink Panther Movie (the Steve Martin one!). In that scene Closeau is trying to learn English and he has a very bad time with that word, as well as Zeni.

well i thought that... UNTIL I FOUND OUT THAT THIS MOVIE IS FROM 2006 AND THE LUPIN SPECIAL IS FROM 2002.

Both police inspectors, both clumsy but devoted to their work, both friggin funny and with a heart of gold. I don't think it's a coincidence!

Oh, you found it, nice. And yeah, that's not a Fiat, but I have a feeling they knew what they were doing, while showing a little yellow car ;)

BTW, another series that had few Lupin III references is Gintama!
I haven't watched all the series, but what I noticed is the thief from episode 18 had the iconic run scene!
My husband told me he noticed more in later seasons, so I'll pay attention while I watch ;)

It is , The director’s favorite was Castle of Cagliostro
The director, John Lasseter, is also one of the co-founders of Pixar and changed the entire animation industry with his push for 3D animation since the 80s! He also states that the Castle of Cagliostro won a his wife over by enthusiastically showing her a clip of the movie (along with bunch of Miyazaki's) after a dinner date (at that time, they were basically strangers).

This is an interesting interview of The Bad Guys's Director Pierre Perifel! He does talk about the Lupin inspirations in it :)

Also found some yt videos showing references from The Bad Guys, just for funsies!

This one is about that Fuma Conspiracy Car scene!

This one compares The Bad Guys with Lupin III: The First
These are great!

I was in the theater watching Bad Guys and just having a blast all by my lonesome. In the prison break scene, the car is a little yellow fiat. I just about died.

No one could contain my glee at how the Bad Guys was such a love letter to Lupin and The Sting. I still can't handle it, thanks for posting these cool refs and the interview!

This isn't so much a direct reference, but this scene from Trigun Stampede is making the rounds on twitter, and Vash's movements (even, to some extent, his redesign) do feel kind of Lupin-inspired.

I'm so glad you mentioned this! I just got done rewatching the original Trigun and there's multiple references in there to Cagliostro.

In an early ep, there's some assassins with finger/arm blades that attack Vash in his hotel room, they took the blocking right out of the hotel scene from the beginning of Cagliostro.

Much later, Vash and Wolfwood are eating spaghetti at a restaurant and it's straight up Lupin and Jigen rolling spaghetti in that cafe from Cagliostro. Sorry I don't have screenshots atm, will try to get that later.

Though it's probably on other wikis, I should also add that these franchises appear to be heavily based on Lupin:

+ Cowboy Bebop (I feel like there were interviews about this somewhere back in the day?)

+ One Piece (Zoro = Goemon, Nami = Fujiko, Monkey D. Luffy = Lupin the Third, Sanji = straight Jigen. I mean, the Monkey part was right there all along.)

+ The Lies of Locke Lamora (Just my opinion but, Locke and Jean = Lupin and Jigen? It is a sci fi/fantasy thief book series with Big Lupin Energy, there's a lot that could be said here.)

+ The Catch (A US live-action TV Series with one season. Wasn't great but the ensemble cast felt heavily inspired by Lupin. Interesting plot twist in that the Lupin-type character is essentially a golden goose being held hostage from going straight by the others, particularly the Femme Fatale name Margot. AFAIK, Margot is the only female name in English that ends in the 'o' sound so I thought that was a possible, compelling little breadcrumb.)

I think that one treehouse of horror episode referenced the lupin parachute scene in the begining of part 2 as one of the ways lisa used the death note in the death note parody.

I also recently rewatched the original Trigun and there's definitely some blue and white boxes in like 2 frames during a chase scene through a town. I forget which episode though!
