Ok so maybe not everyone, the show is pretty violent. Being a vampire show there are some pretty bloody scenes. On top of that there are depictions of suicide, domestic violence, implied sexual violence and one racist hate mob so if any of that's an (understandable) dealbreaker for you, feel free to dip.

My experience with Anne Rices world before this was, really liking the 90's movie, reading the book, and liking it ok. But I never really gelled with the rest of the series. But it’s a series I've always wanted to like more, if that makes any sense. It being the progenitor of basically all modern vampire stories (Louis and Lestat's descendants pop up in Buffy, Twilight, Vampire Diaries, What We Do in The Shadows) But one thing IWTV has that most of its children do not, is homoeroticism. Which goes from subtext to text pretty quickly in the books.

So when AMC announced that it was making a new show, I was curious. Especially since it was making big changes from the book. Rice and her son seem have been heavily involve in preproduction (before her death in 2021) so it was interesting to me that such changes were happening with author involvement. Normally, I expect authors to be very protective of the original text. And I have to say every change that has been made has not only been good its main the stories more rich than I think its ever been.

It has an approach to adaptation I've rarely seen, a dazzling mix of changes and deep cuts from the later books. More over it's gay as hell. There's more mainstream gay representation than ever before in American media (which is to say there is more than zero) but this show feels frank and authentic in way that few prestige tv shows are.

Jacob Anderson as Louis has completely blow me away, he has a speech in the first episode that was so electrifying I forgot to blink or breath. (if you've seen the show you know what I'm talking about) I never thought that I would say I like Louis, the sad moody boy, more than the fun loving Lestat, but fuck it here we are. That said Sam Reid is a force to record with in his own right and I think has become the definitive Lestat more me.

There’s a ton more to talk about with the show (the costumes and lighting a gorgeous, the weaving in of the actual history of the city of New Orleans is great) The show is currently streaming on AMC+ but go with god and get however you can.

Anyway I just wanna gush about this show somewhere and you legally can stop me, so here we are.

I really want to check it out eventually! I have trouble getting around to stuff but I finally watched Season 3 and 4 of What We Do in the Shadows and I should definitely get around to this one…

what we do in shadows is amazing! every season I worried that this will be the one I don't like and every year its as funny as ever. IWTV is only 7 episode per season so at least its short so far.

I agree haha I think they’ve managed to keep it fresh and funny! It’s hard to keep tension AND humor alive in things like this. I think they’ve struck a great balance of not being afraid to shake up the status quo but still keeping me interested in the characters!
