I think everyone around here loves some classics, and I’ll definitely have a question for that in the future but I would love to hear about 2-3 of your favorites that are from the past 5 years!

For myself, Royce made me into a huge Kaguya-sama Love is War fan! I love Ishigami so much :loop_sad:

I deeply loved OddTaxi, fantastic story, I love animal characters plus great suspense from start to end!!

And for my last one, I think it’s not shock to say that Ranking of Kings was a masterpiece. I would recommend it to ANYONE who can handle some blood, it’s dark but hopeful and the animation and characters make it impossible to take your eyes off it!

I'm not the biggest modern anime fan but I am a big fan of Jojo's Bizarre Adventure and while the manga is quite old, the latest anime seasons are quite recent. I love these wacky escapades these characters go on and its nice seeing them in motion.

Ranking of Kings was something that really surprised me. I watched it with a friend and we were blown away by how flawless the worldbuilding was.

For my third pick, I know this is the off-topic section of the forum but I don't have that many picks to begin with, but Lupin Zero blew me away by how charming and retro it was. I don't think i'm telling anyone here something new with this. I recently rewatched the 6 episodes and man, it's so good. I'd love to see more Young Lupin adventures

Haha I would totally have listed Zero if I wasn’t trying to avoid saying Lupin. But yeah I think that Zero absolutely ranks up there! I felt such elation watching that haha but I would say I dunno how well it would stand completely alone rather than already knowing a lot about MP Manga and Lupin history!

I try and watch a variety of old and new shows, but 80s and 90s anime will always have my heart. That being said I've really enjoyed Spy X Family, it just finished up it's second season and has held up really well! The problem I've had with modern stuff is after 5 or so episode it really goes downhill, either the animation, the writing, or the plot just getting confusing or drawn out (I'll admit I had this problem with Ranking of Kings - I really wanted to like it!!) but Spy has stayed pretty consistent and funny!

My other two top picks
Laid Back Camp; slice of life anime done WELL! It's not weird and horny, it's just regular girls going camping together and having a good time. The animation is nice, the voice acting is good, and it's one of those feel good shows that makes me want to experience things! It's all on Crunchyroll.

Hakumei and Mikochi; another slice of life show done well, also not weird and horny. The animation is pretty good and it's almost frame for frame from the manga (which is even better btw). It's two girls in their mid 20s who live together but they're 2 inches tall. The animal townsfolk are my favourite version of animal characters. The show over all has big Miyazaki/Arietty/Borrowers kinda vibes! It's all on Hidive & Bluray.

Talk to me about cute slice of life stuff :loop_heart:

Cyberpunk Edgerunners nuff said but I feel like you need to play the game as well and some people don't have the specs to run that unless they want their PS4 Original Model to blow up.

Devilman Crybaby, a modern adaptation of the most controversial manga of its time, DEVILMAN! A beautiful story about love but also read the manga because it does differ. It's sad it took over 40 years to get a Devilman Adaptation that keeps most of the tone and story beats of the manga but also does things better in areas. Really did show how times have changes for television as a whole.

An anime that I did like recently that didn't break my heart into two and cry into my bed is Digimon Ghost Game which is airing, I love the characters like Kiyoshiro and Jellymon especially, it's basically Digimon meets Scooby Doo and has a more episodic nature and that russian roulette consistency of quality. Theres 63 episodes of this series rn and idk when its gonna end, I just know that the Toei animators really need to eat.

Sonny Boy (2021) is an anime I recommend at any chance I get to people who are comfortable with more abstract stories! It's written and directed by Natsume Shingo, who directed season 1 of One Punch Man, and to my understanding, he was pretty much handed a blank check to make whatever he wanted. Such opportunities are super rare, and the result is such a breath of fresh air. I feel like this one is best experienced without knowing too much about it going in, but I will say that episode 8 has lived in my mind ever since I saw it.

On the other hand Heike Monogatari (2021) is an anime that assumes some familiarity with it's source material, and to be fair, the source material is about 800 years old. Since it assumes its audience knows who wins the war, who survives the battle of Dan-no-Ura, and who famously doesn't, the adaptation confronts head on what it means to tell a story even when (especially when) we all know it'll end in tragedy. This show ends up being very gentle, and really humanizes characters who have taken on a mythological status over the centuries. "You know this story," the show says, "but they don't because they're living it." Also, since it's directed by Yamada Naoko, this anime is gorgeous.

Now that I've gushed about some lesser-watched new anime, I'll admit that I am not immune to hype and that I really adored Chainsaw Man (2022).

For anime made in the last five years, a huge agree with Cotton on Sonny Boy, one of my favourite shows ever!

Moriarty the Patriot has also been a fantastic spin on the traditional Sherlock Holmes lore and has given Moriarty the best characterisation ever, and has some great fun with what we traditionally know about the world of Holmes!

Birdie Wings is one of my top sporting anime, with golf already being a favourite of mine being made more exciting by introducing all those high-stakes situations!

While it's still early days, I can also see High Card being a favourite as well!

So I do not like modern anime but the one that I actually like is a movie called a wind named amnesia which is really really sad it's a really sad movie and I love it. Another one is the 70s anime called "Candy Candy" which actually I watched two months ago during my trip to New York to see my aunt. I actually like another magical girl anime which is not Sailor Moon is called "MAGCIAL STAR EM" I think. Although I do like "Creamy Mami" I like magical star better and also I can rank "Pretty Sammy/Sammi #5, my top 3 is "Magical Angel Mint"
