I've had trouble finding a press release that included everything, so I wanted to share! They've announced a new Lupin kabuki show that seems to be having 4 performances over the course of the next year and a half. Looks like one in Tokyo, one in Nagoya, one in Kyoto, and one in Fukuoka.

When I have time I'll share screenshots of automatic translations from the ticket site but the plot sounds like it has a slight Cagliostro influence. I really hope they do a simul-cast of it again, if anyone hears about info for that, please share in this thread. Thanks!

I'm tempted to go back for this... I really hope they release a region free DVD again at least! I loved the first show..

Plot description:

Iffy translation via machine:
Title maybe: The Emerald Castle
Plot:
"The story takes place during the feudal era. Seorihime, the daughter of the Suwa lord, the Harumiya family, was living a quiet life at Kamakura Hatsuse Temple, but after her father's death, she is forced into a marriage with the regent Danjō to ensure the survival of her family. It is then that Lupin (Ryū Hakurō Sansei) arrives to steal the vast fortune accumulated at the temple, and the two meet. When the wind of Lupin blows into the life of this sheltered princess who dreams of freedom, an adventure begins surrounding a hidden treasure in a legendary ancient castle. The delicate feelings between Lupin and the princess waver amidst their respective destinies.
Lupin, the princess, Jigen, Ishikawa Goemon, and Fujiko compete with their formidable enemy Danjō for the treasure, while Zenigata pursues them. The curtain rises on this Kabuki-inspired "heroine's tale" of Lupin."

I think maybe "Danjo" is supposed to be Daimyo? 大名 As in the title of a feudal lord. But I am not confident lol I need to pick over the text more to be sure.

So Lupin exists during the feudal era now? Kinda gives new meaning to "The Third" wonder how that works out in the grand scheme of things.

Did the other Kabuki's do this too? I haven't been fortunate enough to see a Lupin musical or kabuki despite my common interest in theatre and Lupin.

The first kabuki show implies that Lupin, Fujiko and Jigen time travelled to this era and are having fun messing around doing their crimes. Whereas Goemon is the original Goemon and Zenigata is Heiji Zenigata.

That... actually makes sense. I mean that sounds like the kind of thing a Lupin spin off would do.

Sorry to keep asking questions but does that mean Zenigata is slightly more competent in this one considering that we are dealing with the actual Heiji Zenigata or is it in name only and he's just himself. I can see Goemon being the same because timelessness is his whole thing but the Zenigata we know and his ancestor are two very different people to the point where some takes on the franchise just ignore his ancestry entirely.

Edit: When I say this one I'm asking about the previous one which you mentioned seeing since this seems to all take place in one loosely connected universe

Zenigata didn't play much of a role, Lupin impersonates him at one point and Zenigata and his troops play the most with the audience, they dance and run hunting for Lupin through the aisles and balconies.

The show has many moments for fun to watch acrobatic stunts, songs, jokes, poetry, and posing so the plot is probably shorter than you would expect. The majority of the main plot is about Goemon vs Lupin and Goemon's tragic love story. After Lupin and Goe become friends, more like they do in Part 1, where they fight and gain respect for each other. Then the "bad guys evil plot" is most of the rest of the time and I won't fully spoil that.

The kabuki show has started touring and our own Myst was there. Hopefully she can tell us more about it later but for now, two photos credited to Taro on bluesky. Fingers super crossed for another international bluray!
