I want to start this off with saying two things. 1 I apologize if I have been posting too much. However I often have a lot to say about things I enjoy and this is a great community to share stuff like that. 2 This is a very me problem with Lupin III that stems from how I was introduced to it. I am almost certain it will not apply to the rest of you and I just wanted to share it because it's been bugging me.
My least favorite aspect of Lupin III is the character assassination of the original Arsène Lupin. Let's tackle them one by one shall we?
1. Womanizer. This is by far the most annoying aspect to me. I watched all of Lupin Zero and those who saw episode 3 would have witnessed what I am referring too. This is so frustrating because it goes against his fundamental nature in the books. He is by definition a GENTLEMAN thief. Romance is an essential aspect of his stories. He often falls in love with a women only to tragically lose her or part ways with her due to his lifestyle as a thief. Think of the relationship with Lupin and Clarisse in The Castle of Cagliostro there was nothing lustful or sexual there. It was the kind of tragic romance you would see in some play. There also wasn't a girl in every story. There was usually one per book. The romance also takes a backseat to everything else occurring until some specific moments.
2. Alcoholic. The rest of my information I am getting from the wiki. It says he lost his empire due to being an alcoholic gambler. In Arsène Lupin vs Herlock Sholmes (copyright don't ask) he proudly proclaims he doesn't eat meat or drink alcohol out of hygiene. He never falls from grace unless undercover or trying to blend in. This simply does not correlate with the man shown.
The conclusion. The original Arsène Lupin is a genuinely cool guy. He has good humor and affection for Ganimard (his Zenigata) and is often just a trickster. He steals only the most high profile of items and often does good things out of altruism. I love these books and they are the reason I found Lupin III which I love just as much if not MORE. So if I could go back in time to Monkey Punch I would say this on the behalf of Maurice Leblanc. You want to create a grandson for my character who is the new best thief. Sure. You want to give him the personality of horny bugs bunny with a gun fine that's hilarious. But please don't go dragging my character down for what honestly is no reason. I mean they could have used Lupin II in place of the original he's right there.
