Okay! So I got a chance to see the kabuki show live this week, and I wanted to share my thoughts and some info about the experience! This was my first time seeing any kabuki at all, and my Japanese is pretty basic, so just the essentials and little else. Thankfully I have the DVD and already watched with subtitles.

Arriving at the theater there were many people picking up bentos, there was an option to preorder them for the long first intermission, which is 30 minutes and intended for you to be able to eat a small meal and use the bathroom.

We browsed the snacks and bought some for ourselves. At intermission we bought a small bento and drink, pretty standard to my theater experience in the US you can get drinks before, at intermissions and afterwards. But the addition of a bento is new to me and fun to get to do.

The Lupin snacks were filled with sweet adzuki red bean paste. There were other snacks in larger package with different art, made by the sweets shop near the theater but we only got the smaller ones. Sorry guys. Here's the photos!

In comparison to the DVD this performance added a scene with Mamo and a character from Immortal Bloodline, Muom, and changed a little bit of the meta joke about the theater it was taking place in. But as far as I can recall the rest was very much the same with just a smaller theater space.

In terms of performance, I especially loved Lupin, Mamo, Zenigata's actor and Itoboshi, Goemon's love interest. They really were all wonderful though. Seeing Lupin's kimono in person was even more amazing, the fade of blue and stars inside the red was awesome!

The energy of characters running through aisles and the acrobatics of people dnacing and flipping was incredible, and the sets were huge and impressive. As a crew person in high school it's fun seeing such impressive sets. Towards the start Goemon has a smal shower of sakura petals. At the end of the show there is even a giant shower of gold confetti over the audience.

The waterfall scene was way more huge and impressive in person, the atmosphere inside the theater really shifted in that scene, you heard rushing water and it felt colder and like a breeze of being near water! The characters splashing around in and out of the water was mesmerizing.

The musical performances overall were far better in person too. The theme got me emotional, and I love hearing most musical instruments played live, though the loud clacks were a bit sharper in person and as someone who can be sound sensitive sometimes that was a little harsh on my ears.

If you haven't watched the filmed performance I honestly think it's a really fun experience and the plot is interesting. Worth checking out if you haven't yet!

I only took only one photo in the theater area because I wanted to not be in people's faces taking a ton of pictures, sorry about that!

The merch was otherwise the same as advertisements showed. Sadly they were sold out of the Lupin standee and the character printed long cloth tangui I was hoping to get. I also bought the program book and I can share photos from that if people are curious. I will hunt down the merch photos from the stuff I didn't buy too if people are interested.

How would one go about finding a DVD or filmed performance of this in the US?
There was a stream you could pay for access to while it was ongoing that is no longer available and there is a region free DVD with English subtitles that was for sale from the theater troop, you might have to go second hand to find it, I'll try to see if I can find the purchase link once I'm home if it's still for sale!

This is sooo cool!!! I LOVE that Jigen standee omg. Thank you for the pics and the review! I didn't think about how the waterfall scene would have felt in the theatre, that makes so much sense. Love that you got to experience this in person!!!

Yeah there is really no comparison to seeing it live! Live performance has this vibe where you really know they did it in a single take with no tricks, lighting, the flips and wirework and musicians, everything done in the moment, it is hard to replicate anything like the sound and feel of reality right in front of you!
