Differences between your first take on the franchise/characters & now?

I was reading an internet article where people were talking about how their first thoughts/impressions on certain shows and the characters in them changed as they grew older. I found it pretty interesting so I thought I'd do that here.

One episode that stands out in this regard is pt.1 ep.4 "One Chance for a Prison Break". It was probably when I was pre-highschool when I watched it for the first time. I really didn't understand why Jigen wouldn't even try to save Lupin, instead he even prevented Fujiko from trying, which made me dislike him and it lasted pretty long. Little did I know it would become one of my most favourite episodes in the entire series! Now I really love how deeply Jigen understands who Lupin really is. The last scene where they laugh together almost makes me cry.

In characters wise, Fujiko has changed the most in my mind. I used to hate her and never understood why Lupin was into her as she looked like just a plain bitch to my eyes. I still can't call her my most favourie character of all but I do love her when she turns into a real badass woman. That said, I would have to rewatch pt.2 ep.20 "Hell Toupee" to remind myself who she really is every time I watch pt.2 ep.61 "The Yam Is Mightier Than the Sword" because what she did to my man in it was unforgivable. :cautious:

My process was watching Cagliostro and then Part 4, and I had a very different impression of Goemon because of how he acted in Part 4. I thought that he was a professional assassin that was wanted internationally as a criminal and that was what placed him in the gang. That he was annoyed by Jigen, Fujiko, and Lupin, but that they were sort of the only people he COULD live with because he had to be on the run. So he begrudgingly accepted that they were his only possible friends.

With having seen nearly all of the series now (I have a few specials left) it's more clear that Goemon has a very close relationship with them, he just expresses himself differently and his relationship with improving with Zantetsuken is way more important than just the fact that he can act as an assassin. Though I still hope more future episodes and movies give more Goemon moments to shine :)

When I first started watching Lupin, it didn't really click with me. I think I made it through Part 1, First Contact, Money Wars, The Secret of Mamo, and the Castle of Cagliostro without having any strong feelings about it. But Fuma Conspiracy had everything I wanted, a great adventure and treasure hunting plot, fun takes on all the characters, gorgeous animation, and a great soundtrack. Even though I've later realized that Yuji Ohno's music is the heart of this franchise, I can't deny that the OST in Fuma is closer to what I personally like. This movie also made me fall in love with Goemon because he seemed like the most interesting and deepest character. Imagine my disappointment when I realized it was just because he had the spotlight in this movie and that he's often there just to cut things in other movies and episodes.

Then I fell in love with Jigen and he became my favourite charater for the longest time. I was really into the idea that he's got a lot of self-loathing because of his past and doesn't think he deserves good things in life. I see him as much more mellow and relaxed now. I never agreed with his dislike of Fujiko, but I tended to portray it more strongly in my fics and headcanons than now. And when it comes to her, I used to struggle with this idea that I need to find some great insight into why she acts the way she does and why she sometimes betrays them and sometimes not, but I've long since accepted that a) it's just something she and Lupin enjoy and b) her writing is the most inconsistent in the franchise, and in one episode she can do unforgivable things and then be super loyal in another, and it's better for my blood pressure if I just pick and choose the portrayals I like.

Yeah agreed on Fujiko. I think it's best to just use whatever bits I like for most of the characters. Having so many different writers, and many times they probably just needed a catalyst for the plot, they cared more sometimes about setting the plot in motion than about making Fujiko (or others) a consistent character with consistent motivations. So I choose what feels best and makes me happy when I write for them lol

honestly, i was pretty much in love with the series from the get-go, lol. i can't remember what i saw first, it might have been part 1. right away i knew it was the show for me. just the right amount of silly antics, drama, mystery, thrill. i actually really like how the main 5 have inconsistent characterizations and change with each iteration. when i first got into lupin I was really into the more serious, plot driven episodes and films because they felt more exciting, but nowadays i just like to watch those silly guys do silly things with guns :)
my favorite character has changed in the past few years, though. when i first started watching, i was super into jigen's character because he's in the closet 😂 fujiko is my clear favorite now. i think she's funny and badass and interesting! i can't get enough of her.

Kid me in the early 2000s who first exposure to anime was inuyasha through adult swim: what? I overslept? great....this guy lupin III aint cute....why does fujikos boobs look like that? is this like ghost stories? what is a bikini inspector? agggh this isn't inuyasha! LORD SESHOMARU-SAMA I FAILED YOU! then I pretty much began my morning sneaking to the family computer to go and read some lemon sesshomaruxreader fanfictions while not knowing what a lemon is. (my anime husbando back then was sesshomaru, now I am not so keen on him as in yashahime he marries rin make of that what you will.)

Me now at 30: god I gotta get a guy who'll simp as hard for me as does lupin for fujiko, cool action sequences, what the manga was far more dirtier than the anime?

For a few years Cagliostro was the only Lupin thing I watched. When I started watching Part 1 my initial perception of Lupin was the same.
A gentleman goofball with a sketchy past. Part 1 being that past, I assumed newer parts would be more like Cagliostro (with the exception of The Woman Called Fujiko Mine). That changed when I watched Mystery of Mamo followed by Part 2.
I did read Jigen as ace at first but the more I watched I now see him as either gay or bi. Fujiko on the other hand I still read as ace.

This thread reminded me I made a short video edit on the difference between Cag-Lupin and regular-Lupin. I never got around to uploading it until now.
Here's the YouTube link.

Like many people, the first lupin thing I've even seen was castle of Cagliostro, and i thought that goemon and fujiko weren't the part of the main cast. For some reason i thought that goemon was just some random local they hired to help them and fujiko was an international spy, probably because she was in disguise for the most part of the movie. But now I've watched part 1 and some episodes of parts 2 and 3, as well as a bunch of movies. It's far more goofy than i originally thought but that made it even more fun

I don't blame you. Goemon was made to look like a part-timer in every episode/film that Miyazaki wrote the script for. Both he & Oshii (the writer who wrote pt.6 ep.4 & 10 in which Goe didn't even show up at all) are well-known as Goemon haters. Miyazaki also hates Fujiko.

okay so my mom is American my dad a brit that means every summer I get to stay in america at their vacation home in florida, now my first introduction to anime was adult swim. at the time I was like 13 when I first started watching adult swim for the anime and pretty obessesed about inuyasha. when I was a kid i did not really like lupin III part 2 was still playing, and the few main reasons why is the adult jokes, my parents were kind of strict and barely let me have tv privileges and made me go to bed at a reasonable hour even during summer so if I wanted to be sneaky about watching inuyasha and maybe have a case for not losing my tv privileges, i had to have my timing at waking up perfect. well i woke up too late missed inuyasha and my dumb luck had the most fan servicey episode of lupin i was pissed because if I got caught watching lupin that would've been no different then my brother getting caught watching the girls gone wild infomercials they had back in the day before he discovered the internet is for porn. my very first impression of lupin was he was a very horny boy. then a week later my dad was like lol "I BOUGHT YOU MANGA YOU WEEB!" he bought like alot tokyopop volumes, and I was like auggh yeah! turns lupin was in the mix, not only was he r*pey in the manga, but he dropped r-word. needless to say I dropped the manga after that one volume until my 20s again when I got bored of current offerings.

my tolerance for edgy manga and anime was kind of low. I mean I was a kid and I wanted to be sneaky to watch the anime at night when I am supposed to be in bed, and knew I had a better argument for not getting into as much trouble as maybe being caught watching inuyasha than lupin III. You have to understand too my parents never let me watch cartoon network before age 13, they thought like the jokes in some of the cartoons were too adult for me, even knowing nick had ren and stimpy, and spongebob had a slew of adult jokes thinly veiled into it.. americans and brits are kind of more prudish about media and children.

today I am old enough to understand nuances and that edginess is okay. I wish we had more edgy anime and manga being made now.

I didn't know what Lupin was back then, until I got a recommendation of the trailer for The First in my feed. I thought it was some cheesy movie just by looking at the trailer and Lupin. But the only thing that clicked out to me was Jigen. I really favoured characters like Jigen (gunslinger type of characters) at that time and it actually took me sometime again to get back on checking out more Lupin III stuff. I started watch the Part V episodes that were free on youtube and it was the best decision of my life. I binged Part V and loved it, later on Part IV and loved it later on the TWCFM series and loved it. From there I determine this is the series I'm going to be a fan of for a long time. And after watching literally a huge chunk of the franchise from there, the thing was Jigen still stood out to me from watching all of the episodes, TV speicals, and movies he was the exact type of character that I liked. Being the laid-back yet badass right hand man of Lupin, he is my favourite fiction character of all time. Of course over I equally liked the main cast and their dynamics overtime but I still favoured Jigen more and I still do now (4 years and counting)(y).
